Tips to Get Ready for Your First Surf Lesson in Tamarindo

So you’re about to catch your first wave in Tamarindo? Amazing choice! With warm water, mellow waves, and that signature pura vida vibe, Tamarindo is one of the best surf towns in Costa Rica — and the perfect place to learn.

Before you paddle out, here’s how to get ready for an unforgettable first surf lesson.

1. Pack the Essentials

Make sure you have everything you need for a fun, stress-free surf session:

  • Swimsuit or surf suit – Choose something that stays put when you move.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen – The Costa Rican sun is strong — and reef-safe keeps the ocean happy.

  • Hat and sunglasses – For before and after your lesson.

  • Water bottle & towel – Hydrate and dry off between waves.

  • Hair ties – A must for long hair.

Pro tip: Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before hitting the beach so it doesn’t wash off right away.

2. Arrive Early and Stretch It Out

Plan to get to the surf school about 15–20 minutes early. You’ll have time to meet your instructor, get fitted for your board, and warm up.

A light stretch or jog helps loosen up your shoulders and legs — you’ll paddle, pop up, and balance more easily.

3. Relax — Everyone Starts Somewhere

It’s totally normal to feel nervous before your first surf lesson. Remember, every surfer was a beginner once!

Your instructor will teach you everything step by step — paddling, popping up, and staying balanced. Don’t worry about getting it perfect; it’s all about having fun.

Laugh when you wipe out. Everyone does — it’s part of the Tamarindo experience!

4. Learn a Little Surf Etiquette

Even beginners can show good surf manners. A few quick rules:

  • Don’t drop in on someone else’s wave.

  • Hold onto your board when you fall.

  • Listen to your instructor and lifeguards.

A little awareness keeps everyone safe and happy in the water.

5. Refuel After Your Lesson

You’ll burn a ton of energy out there — so treat yourself! Tamarindo has amazing cafés and smoothie bars just steps from the beach.

Grab a post-surf açaí bowl, fresh juice, or local favorite gallo pinto. You’ve earned it!

6. Capture the Moment

Ask your instructor or a friend to take a few photos — your first surf session is one to remember!

Final Thoughts

Learning to surf in Tamarindo is about more than just riding waves — it’s about slowing down, connecting with the ocean, and embracing the pura vida lifestyle.

With the right mindset (and plenty of sunscreen), you’ll be standing up and smiling in no time. See you out there!
