When most travelers think of Tamarindo, they picture surfboards, sunsets, and beach bars but locals know that the real magic hides just beyond the main streets. From secret tide pools to breathtaking hilltop views, these hidden gems around Tamarindo show off the untouched, adventurous side of Guanacaste.

If you’re craving something more than the usual tourist stops, here are a few spots perfect for explorers who want to see the wild side of Costa Rica.

1. The Mirador in Tamarindo

One of the highest hills in town, El Mirador gives you an unforgettable panoramic view of Tamarindo and the Pacific Ocean. From the top, you can see the golden coastline, the estuary, and even Playa Grande stretching in the distance.

It’s the perfect spot for sunrise photos, a quiet moment before your surf lesson, or simply soaking in the view after a morning ATV ride.

Insider tip: The road is steep but short it’s worth bringing a drink, your camera, and a friend to enjoy the view together.

2. Puerto Viejo Conchal

Just a short drive from Playa Conchal, this quiet corner near Puerto Viejo Conchal offers unbelievably clear turquoise water surrounded by mountains. From here, you can spot the white sands of Playa Conchal and even the rooftops of Playa Flamingo in the distance.

It’s one of the area’s most peaceful swimming spots ideal for snorkeling, relaxing, or simply escaping the crowds.

Insider tip: Bring water shoes; some parts are rocky but lead to calm, crystal-clear pools.

3. The Point Where Langosta and Tamarindo Meet

Where the beaches of Playa Langosta and Tamarindo meet, there’s a stunning rocky point that becomes accessible during low tide. It’s one of the best-kept secrets for watching the sunset, waves crash gently on both sides, and the sky lights up in every shade of orange and pink.

Insider tip: Visit an hour before sunset and walk carefully across the rocks; it’s the perfect photo spot when the tide is low.

4. The Natural Pool in Playa Grande

Hidden among the rocks of Playa Grande, you’ll find a small tide pool that fits about 4–6 people a natural jacuzzi surrounded by tiny fish and crabs. This spot is a favorite among locals who know when the tide’s right.

During low tide, it’s calm, safe, and a fun place to cool off between surf sessions.

Insider tip: Only visit during low tide; high tide covers the pool completely.

5. The Ocean Cave Pool at Playa Piratas

At Playa Piratas, a short 5–10 minute walk from the beach entrance during low tide reveals a hidden pool inside the rocks almost like a mini cave carved by the ocean. The sunlight reflects through the opening, creating glowing turquoise water unlike anything else nearby.

Insider tip: Go early in the morning for the best light and calmest water, and always check the tide schedule before exploring.
